Hedgehogs at Whitby Wildlife Sanctuary

As its national Hedgehog week myself and writer Helen LeRoux visited our resident Hedgehog rescuer here in Whitby.

Alexandra Farmer is dedicated to rescuing all manner of wild animals at her converted home.

She had some great tips for us for spotting whether a hedgehog is unwell for example if you see one out and about in the day the chances are something is amiss.

Most of Alex’s cases are treated for things like worms, and then once they are a healthy weight are released back into the wild.

But a few residents have disabilities which would make them too vulnerable to risks and predators, so they stay permanently with Alex to see out their days in comfort.

Alex tells us she is hoping to build a walled hedgehog garden for her prickly residents to keep them safe and give them the best possible life at the centre

You can keep track of Alex’s rescues and releases here

We met Stevie and Cody who are partially sighted, Flo who has three legs and sadly Chloe who is suffering from cancer and has had a tumour removed. They were all little characters and happy to pose for the camera!
