Biking Viking at Whitby Abbey

As I walked up the 199 steps, I paused to look out over the view of Whitby and contemplate how lucky I am to work in such a beautiful part of the country, knowing my destination was the abbey, where I would meet a Viking re-enactor made it all the more surreal.

The purpose of the shoot was to create some fun photographs for English Heritage of Rod the Viking, cycling in the abbey grounds. The idea was to tie in with the Tour de Yorkshire event this coming weekend and also the English Heritage Viking event taking place at the abbey.

Just as we set up the shoot, the heavens opened and it began to hail, but in the end I think the moody skies just added to the atmosphere of the ancient ruins and the roaring viking. If it wasn’t for the blue, yellow and white mountain bike it could have been the year 793….
